As the weather warms up and layers come off, spring is the perfect time to start fresh—with your skin and your next tattoo. At Bone & Blossom Tattoo Studio, we love seeing clients use the changing seasons as motivation to finally book that dream piece. But before you sit down in the chair, let’s talk about one of the most overlooked parts of the process: how to prep your skin.
Healthy, well-prepared skin helps your tattoo go in smoother, heal better, and look its absolute best. Whether you’re a first-timer or booking a full-day session, these spring-ready tips will help you show up confident, hydrated, and ready for your new ink.
Exfoliate (Gently!) the Week Before
Think of exfoliating as spring cleaning for your skin—you're clearing away dead skin cells so your artist has a smooth, clean surface to work on.
Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt 2–3 times in the week leading up to your appointment.
Focus on the area getting tattooed—but don’t overdo it! Avoid redness or irritation.
Avoid any harsh chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or aggressive treatments near your tattoo site at least two weeks before your session.
Hydrate Inside and Out
Your skin is your canvas—hydrated skin makes the best canvas.
Drink lots of water in the days leading up to your appointment (aim for half your body weight in ounces).
Moisturize daily with an unscented lotion like Lubriderm or Aveeno. Focus on the area to be tattooed.
Dry, flaky, or sunburned skin can make tattooing more difficult—and more painful.
Avoid Sunburn Like the Plague
We know it’s tempting to bask in the sunshine after a long winter, but sunburned skin can’t be tattooed.
Avoid tanning beds and unprotected sun exposure before your appointment.
If you're going to be outdoors, cover the area to be tattooed or use SPF 50+.
If you do get burned, you’ll likely need to reschedule your session.
Healing skin doesn’t take ink well—and at Bone & Blossom, we’re committed to safe, respectful tattooing that prioritizes your long-term results.
Dress for the Tattoo You Want
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that gives your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Think ahead about what you’re wearing so you don’t have to fully undress—or feel uncomfortable.
Here are a few tips:
Sleeveless or button-down tops for arm, chest, or back pieces
Shorts or skirts for thigh or leg tattoos
A swimsuit top or open-back shirt for sternum or shoulder work
Remember: your comfort matters. At our studio, we strive to create a safe space for self-expression, and that includes making sure you feel relaxed and respected during your entire session.
Bonus Tips for Day-Of Success
✔ Eat a good meal before your appointment
✔ Avoid alcohol and heavy caffeine
✔ Don’t shave the area yourself—let your artist do it to prevent irritation
✔ Bring water, snacks, and a layer in case the studio gets chilly
