Tattoo Aftercare 101: What to Do (and What Not to Do)

You just got your new tattoo—now what? At Bone & Blossom Tattoo Studio, we know that proper healing is just as important as the tattoo itself. Whether it’s your first or your fifteenth, following a clear aftercare routine ensures that your tattoo heals smoothly and looks vibrant for years to come.

Below, we break down everything you need to know: bandages, products, healing tips, and big don’ts—all part of our commitment to respectful and intentional tattooing.

Immediately After Your Tattoo:

Saniderm/Tegaderm/Recovery Film

Your artist may apply a breathable bandage such as Saniderm, Tegaderm, or Recovery Derm. These coverings create a protective seal over the tattoo and are designed to stay on for up to 5 days.

Important Tips:

  • Leave the bandage on for a maximum of 5 days.

  • If the seal breaks close to the tattoo (within 1 inch) or you experience itching, redness, or swelling around the edges, remove it early.

  • For easiest removal: peel it back slowly in the direction of hair growth during a warm shower to loosen the adhesive. Avoid pulling upward.

After the Bandage Comes Off: 4-Step Healing Routine

Do this at least 3 times per day until the tattoo is fully healed and peeling has stopped.

  1. Wash Your Hands ThoroughlyFriction is key—vigorously wash and rinse your hands before touching your tattoo.

  2. Gently Wash the TattooUse fragrance-free antibacterial soap and your fingertips to clean the area.

  3. Allow to Air DryPat with a white paper towel or let the tattoo fully air dry.

  4. Apply MoisturizerUse a small amount of Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or Aveeno Baby Care. Less is more—just enough to hydrate.

Showering Tips

  • Take quick showers only—no soaking or water directly hitting your tattoo.

  • Keep soap, lotion, and clean paper towels ready for your post-shower routine.

  • Do not wash your tattoo in the shower itself—clean it afterward as part of the 4-step process.

What to Expect During Healing

  • Clear fluid buildup in the first few hours is normal and should be gently washed away.

  • Within a few days, your tattoo will start to peel or flake, similar to a sunburn.

  • Itching is also normal—use lotion, an ice pack, or gentle patting (no scratching!).

  • The tattoo may look dull or cloudy while healing. True vibrancy returns in 2–3 weeks.

If you notice redness, discharge, swelling, or a rash, contact your artist immediately and consider seeking medical attention. Illinois state law requires us to report any tattoo-related infections treated by a medical professional.

Long-Term Care Tips

Once your tattoo is healed:
